Career Assistance across the States!

May 13th, 2010 by Donna Scanlon

In these tough economic times, many U.S. states and the Federal government have pulled together a number of great resources for their residents to use in getting career help.  In an effort to help get the word out, we have begun an effort to compile websites in the areas of general resources, resume help, job search, and state specific resources to share with you.

The following categories of resources have been added to our BeOnline Internet Resources page:

Career Assistance: General Resources
As the name implies, this list contains resources of all types: government links, portals, and sites providing many types of career related materials.

Career Assistance: Job Search Sites/Portals
Links for many of the popular job search sites as well as some of the lesser known or career specific (e.g. library jobs) sites may be found here.

Career Assistance: Resume & Cover Letters
Pulling together a resume and cover letter may often be challenging.  The sites noted here provide direction and examples to assist with creating a resume that represents you.

Career Assistance: State Resources
Collected here you will find job search and employment resources that are specific to each state.  The list is in alphabetical order by state.  Resources providing services in all states have been gathered at the top of this page.

Don’t forget your local public library!  Public librarians can often point you to specific resources just for your area.  Many public and academic libraries have set up “Career Corners” or may offer training to help you improve your skills.  You may find public libraries listed in the government section (“blue pages” in the U.S.) or business section (“yellow pages”) of your local telephone book.  You may also search the U.S. Department of Education’s Public Library Locator to find U.S. public libraries by name, city, county, state or zip code.

The BeOnline Career Assistance collections are a work in progress.  New resources will be added as they are identified.  If you are aware of useful resources in any of these categories, please let us know!

My co-authors for this post and the resource links provided in the subject categories above are Kris Pruzin, Digital Reference Specialist, and Steven Davenport, Reference Librarian Humanities & Social Sciences.  Additional consulting provided by Tori Hill, Acting Chief Humanities & Social Sciences, Carolyn Larson, Head of Business References Services and Julie Mangin, Network Development.
