European Commission

This article takes a look at labour markets in the European Union (EU) at the regional level (NUTS 2) and the impact of the biggest economic downturn since World War II, after a period of several years of economic growth and job creation. The EU has responded by adopting the European economic recovery plan and other measures to secure existing jobs and put people back into employment as quickly as possible.

Although the measures have helped to reduce the negative impact of the crisis, they have been unable to halt job losses or rising unemployment entirely. At the moment when the data for this analysis were extracted, unemployment was 10 % in the euro area and only slightly lower in the EU-27.
